Outdoor Warning Systems
Macon County EMA coordinates with communities throughout the county to support and test their Outdoor Warning Systems. Each outdoor warning siren is owned and maintained independently by the community in which it is located. Macon County EMA works with these communities to help coordinate countywide testing and public awareness.
Outdoor warning systems are designed to alert people who are outdoors of an imminent threat, specifically a tornado, direct them to seek immediate shelter and then seek additional information. Outdoor warning sirens are not designed to be heard indoors, or to warn those who are indoors. They are one part of a broader emergency notification system and should not be relied upon as the sole source of emergency information.
Macon County EMA recommends using a layered approach to receiving emergency information. Residents should consider using multiple reliable sources, including:

- Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) on mobile devices
- NOAA Weather Alert Radio
- Trusted weather and emergency notification apps
- Local television, radio, and other trusted local media

Know how you will receive warnings before severe weather occurs, and have a plan for where you will seek shelter. Stay weather ready!
